Homeless Student “Summer Fun” Backpack Program begins collections
More than 600 students identified as homeless throughout the St. Johns County School District receive summer help
The St. Johns County School District ASSIST (Aid & Support for Students in Sudden Transition) program seeks to ensure homeless children and youth are educated, receive the same special programs and services as other children and are able to participate in the Free Lunch and Breakfast Program. The 600 plus students identified as homeless will be dismissed from school in early June and will be without the support of ASSIST over the following few months.
In an effort to help bridge this gap for homeless youth, St. Johns County nonprofit JCP CARES is assembling “Summer Fun” backpacks for the children. Items such as books, journals, puzzles, craft items and other activities will be collected during the month of April in several locations around St. Johns County. The backpacks will then be assembled and delivered to the St. Johns County School District for distribution during the last week of school. Last year, the initiative generated almost $20,000.00 in charitable donations, including a new pair of Reebok shoes for each student donated by Maurice Jones-Drew.
“Promoting awareness of the problem of homelessness is our number one priority so the children will gain more support throughout the year,” stated Kathy Bravo, President & Founder of JCP CARES. “The feedback we received last year was that the students were very appreciative of the donations, but even happier that they were thought of beyond the assistance they receive through the schools.”
Collection boxes are located in St. Johns County area at several local merchants, businesses and banks. A list of all collection locations in the St. Johns County area, can be found in the right hand column.
