A Modern Day Slavery museum came to the Switzerland Community Church in NW St. Johns County on Monday, November 15th. It was a wonderful educational opportunity for both adults as well as children to visit the museum so that they could become aware of the problems in the southern portion of our county.
We are looking for groups to go to the Armstrong area and host a dinner once a month on the 3rd Monday night of the month at the SEA Community Center. It is a great opportunity for civic and church groups to get an idea of what is going on right here in our back yard. Contact Kathy Bravo at (904) 655-1040 or by email at kbravo@jcpcares.org for more information.
The conditions that exist in the migrant camps are depicted in the following videos.
The first is an interview with Jewel Goodman, a modern day slave, by John Pendygraft (tampabay.com) posted on March 30, 2010. For most of his life Jewel Goodman has toiled long days in hot fields picking cabbage, potatoes and tobacco. Eight of those years were spent in slavery in Hastings, Fla.

The second video was produced by Marley Klaus for 60 Minutes exposing the plight of migrant workers in Florida. A 60 Minutes cameraman went undercover at a labor camp in Wachula, FL run by Wardell and Dorothy Williams. He documented the deplorable living conditions and the inflated prices of items sold at the company store on credit putting the workers so much in debt that they became indentured and had no hope of ever leaving the camp.
